New publication on efficient photoinduced second-harmonic generation in silicon nitride photonics

November 9, 2020

Xiyuan's latest research on second harmonic generation (SHG) in silicon nitride ring resonators has been published in Nature Photonics. Using a combination of a weak intrinsic χ(2) to kickstart the SHG process, followed by a χ(3) process between the pump, the SHG signal, and a DC field (optically driven by the photogalvanic effect) to amplify the process, we were able to realize efficient SHG (in terms of normalized efficiency, absolute efficiency, and absolute output power) in a silicon-based platform for the first time.  Key to this performance is the ability to phase- and frequency-match widely separated optical modes, whose resonant enhancement enables efficient SHG despite the relatively small effective χ(2) produced in this system.
