Hamiltonian engineering for quantum simulation and metrology

In this talk, I will present some of our recent work in developing quantum control schemes for engineering Hamiltonians, with applications in quantum metrology and simulation. Specifically, I will describe a technique of Hamiltonian "interpolation" to enhance the resolution of interference based quantum metrology. Experimentally we achieve through this a resolution boost of about 100x in NV center assisted magnetometry. I will also describe some ideas for the efficient quantum simulation 2D nearest neighbor Hamiltonian models from a linear chain of ions, with potential applications in simulating topological physics with the exquisite quantum system offered by the 1D ion trap.
