Dissipative quantum systems

Incorporating dissipation into the description of quantum systems is a subtle business.  AMO systems offer a remarkably precise realization of the most simplified models of dissipation, and yet even here there are many (very basic) open questions.  For example, under what circumstances does dissipation cause a quantum system to thermalize?
This talk will have two parts given by two people.  One of us will sketch the formalism used to describe dissipation in AMO systems, and argue that dissipation does not generally lead to thermalization.  The other one will explain why the first one is probably wrong more often than not.
