(One-Shot) Information Theory and Statistical Mechanics
The growing field of one-shot statistical mechanics, like that of fluctuation relations, concerns small scales and nonequilibrium states. The two frameworks were recently unified (http:// arxiv.org/abs/1409.3878) and inform each other. I will introduce "one-shot" tools developed in information theory to describe every trial -- every "one shot" -- of a protocol such as work extraction or erasure. The introduction will include Renyi entropies and divergences, guaranteed work, failure probabilities, and resource theories. This cross-pollination of one-shot statistical mechanics and fluctuation relations is hoped to yield insights into potential applications such as molecular motors and nanoscale engines.
