Micro-Electromechanics: A New Quantum Technology.

Micro-mechanical resonators are an established technology for processing classical signals. The field of quantum micro-electromechanics seeks to use these resonators to process signals in an essentially quantum way. In this talk, I will describe how we use electricity to achieve exquisite control and measurement of micro-mechanical resonators. Our tools are now sharp enough to bring these objects into a regime of quantum behavior. Having entered the quantum regime, we are now able to pursue many exciting ideas. We endeavor to: store quantum information on a chip by exploiting the relatively slow propagation of sound compared to light, transfer quantum states between two incompatible systems via a mechanical intermediary, and test quantum theory itself in an unexplored region of mass and size scales.
